Toronto, September 2007 – Award-winning director/producer Maureen Judge casts a spotlight into the shadows and unveils the soul of the scribe with season two of Heart of a Poet, premiering on Bravo! September 6 at 8 p.m. ET.
Each of the 13 weekly episodes profiles an individual poet, exploring their lives and literature, worlds and work. From the jazz-infused style of the legendary Sheri-D Wilson, to the Gerald Lampert Award-winning works of Ray Hsu, Heart of a Poet paints an eclectic and vibrant picture of poets as diverse as the Canadian cultural landscape that inspires their work. Taking poetry from the page to the public, Heart of Poet features live performances.
Hosted by Toronto’s own vivacious spoken-word poet Andrea Thompson, Heart of a Poet uses interviews, on-the-street recitations and readings to take viewers inside the world of Canadian poetry in all its varied forms.
The season premiere features B.C. poet Shane Koyczan, a winner of the National Poetry Slam and “Best Poetry Reading” prize at the Edinburgh Book Festival. His punchy, edgy delivery, uncanny ability to weave words and unwavering patriotism recently earned him the role of ‘spokespoet’ for the Canadian Tourism Commission, who enlisted his skill to write a patriotic piece on Canada. The series continues with performance poet and long-time NOW Magazine contributor Robert Priest (September 13), the hard-driving, hip-hop style of Motion (September 20) and Order of Canada recipient Daphne Marlatt (September 27).
The self-proclaimed “Mama of Dada”, Calgary native Sheri-D Wilson, is profiled on November 1. She is the founder and Artistic Director of the Calgary International Spoken Word Festival and a founding member of SWAN (Spoken Word Arts Network).
Governor General Award-winner and University of Toronto’s inaugural E.J. Pratt Professor of Canadian Literature George Elliot Clark will be featured on November 8.
The final episode on November 29 showcases two-time Juno-award winning DUB poet Lillian Allen (Revolutionary Tea Party and Conditions Critical), who is a professor at the Ontario College of Art and Design and was the first Canada Council Writer-in-Residence at Queen’s University.
Heart of a Poet is produced by Maureen Judge, best known for her Genie-award-winning documentary Unveiled: The Mother Daughter Relationship.
